Shell model intermittency is the hidden self-similarity

چکیده
Using the shell model of turbulence, we show that intermittency with power-law scaling structure functions can be derived as a consequence new (hidden) symmetry equations motion. In this description, anomalous exponents are given by Perron-Frobenius eigenvalues linear operators based on self-similar statistics.

Word confusability - measuring hidden Markov model similarity
We address the problem of word confusability in speech recognition by measuring the similarity between Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) using a number of recently developed techniques. The focus is on defining a word confusability that is accurate, in the sense of predicting artificial speech recognition errors, and computationally efficient when applied to speech recognition applications. It is sho...
متن کاملTurbulent intermittency and Euler similarity solutions
Self-similar Euler singularities may be useful for understanding some aspects of Navier-Stokes turbulence. Here, a causal explanation for intermittency is given, based on the control of the sudden growth of the gradients by the Euler equations. This explanation uses certain Euler solutions as intermediate asymptotics in Navier-Stokes turbulence [1] – controlling the dynamics over a limited spat...
متن کاملSelf-similarity of complex networks and hidden metric spaces
We demonstrate that the self-similarity of some scale-free networks with respect to a simple degree-thresholding renormalization scheme finds a natural interpretation in the assumption that network nodes exist in hidden metric spaces. Clustering, i.e., cycles of length three, plays a crucial role in this framework as a topological reflection of the triangle inequality in the hidden geometry. We...
متن کاملIntermittency in turbulence: computing the scaling exponents in shell models.
We discuss a stochastic closure for the equation of motion satisfied by multiscale correlation functions in the framework of shell models of turbulence. We present a plausible closure scheme to calculate the anomalous scaling exponents of structure functions by using the exact constraints imposed by the equation of motion. We present an explicit calculation for fifth-order scaling exponent by v...
متن کاملIntermittency in the large N - limit of a spherical shell model for turbulence
A spherical shell model for turbulence, obtained by coupling N replicas of the Gledzer, Okhitani and Yamada shell model, is considered. Conservation of energy and of an helicity-like invariant is imposed in the inviscid limit. In the N → ∞ limit this model is analytically soluble and is remarkably similar to the random coupling model version of shell dynamics. We have studied numerically the co...
